How to organize your closet without discarding everything

Make your clothes easier to use before deciding what should leave.

Make the current season visible

Move frequently worn clothes to an easy-to-reach place. Put out-of-season pieces in clean, dry storage if you need space. Check pockets and care labels as you go; work in one category at a time rather than emptying the entire room.

Separate fit from memory

Try on pieces you are unsure about. Make piles for wear now, repair or alter, store, and decide later. A damaged button and a poor fit are different problems; do not discard something you value simply to reach a number.

Use a decision date

Put uncertain pieces in a box with a date to revisit. If you decide to pass items on, consider resale, donation where accepted, repair or textile recycling. Record what remains so you can build outfits and see real gaps before buying.
