How to make outfits from clothes you already own

A repeatable method for finding new combinations in your closet.

Pick an anchor

Choose one item you like wearing: a pair of trousers, a dress, a shirt or shoes. Pair it with something familiar so the first outfit feels comfortable. Then change one element rather than replacing everything.

Try proportion and texture

Tuck or untuck a shirt, add a longer layer, or swap a fitted top for a relaxed one. Combine textures such as denim and knitwear, or repeat a color in a small accessory. Try the clothes on: a combination that looks good on a hanger may feel different on you.

Save what works

Take a mirror photo or save the pieces together. Add a note about weather, occasion or fit. Repeating outfits is useful information: the combinations you reach for reveal which pieces do the most work in your wardrobe.
